The Secret by Max Monroe

Mr. Hot Professor, the man I’m determined to resist, is challenging me to a competition—a playful, secret game, so to speak—where the winner takes all.

The Secret, an all-new hot as sin romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

Dear Fellow Bookworms,

I need your help.

I, Rachel Rose, am in quite the pickle with a hot-as-sin English Lit professor by the name of Ty Winslow, and I don’t know how to get out of it.

Let me break it down for you:

Girl meets Guy.

Girl gives Guy her underwear on a dare but nothing else identifying (like her name or number) because she plans to never see Guy again.

But Girl does see Guy again, in a very professional setting, where she is to be the Teaching Assistant to his Professor for an entire semester.

Girl would like to ignore all events of the past, but Guy is a whole list of tempting things that are hard to resist. (See below:)

#1: Insanely attractive.
#2: The most fun a girl could ever have.
#3: Successful and intelligent.
#4: He can quote Walt Whitman at the drop of a hat—which I’m sure you know is a dangerous thing for a literature-lover.
#5: Smooth with a capital S. He could charm the panties off a woman WITHOUT the help of a dare.

And now, Mr. Hot Professor, the man I’m determined to resist, is challenging me to a competition—a playful, secret game, so to speak—where the winner takes all.

My plan? Play the game long enough to win—long enough to walk away with the upper hand—without doing something stupid like falling in love.

It’s possible . . . right?

If you have any advice, please reach out to me soon—before it’s too late.

XOXO,
Rachel

I loved this book. I need you to know that first and that I'm not just saying that because I got an advance copy. I have also loved the other books in this series, The Bet and The Pact. Those Winslow brothers are just... wonderful. This book was fun and despite the fact that I do not like forbidden type romance books, this didn't feel forbidden. It helped that Rachel wasn't his student so there wasn't a weird age gap. Ty was super loveable and I was rooting for things to work out (as all good romance novels do). The humor in this one made it even better. I can't wait for Remy's book, The Redo to come out in July! I've been waiting to read more about him since Winnie Winslow & Wes's book (Scoring the Billionaire) and Charlotte & Nick's (Dr. NEURO). They're not required to read but give a little more insight into the Winslow family.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up by Pippa Grant

We need to talk about this book. Mostly because it is part of the BBA Book Club this month, but also because I'm co-hosting the discussion about it.

Join us at 8pm EST on August 1st for

Description
He’s the biggest, baddest, most spider-fearing motherpucker on the ice…

When you’re named after the king of the gods, the world expects certain things of you.

Tough? Damn right.

Smart? Don’t let the hockey uniform fool you.

Large and in charge? Honey, I’m the biggest, baddest, mother pucking-est machine to ever own the ice. I shoot. I score. In and out of the rink. I don’t come early, but I come often, if you know what I mean. And I always leave the ladies wanting more.

Until that chick last night.

I’m no one-thrust wonder, and you’re damn right I’m going to prove to her I can do better. But every time I think I’m finally on my way back into her pants, she one-ups and out-balls me.

I should cut my losses, lick my wounds, and walk away.

But Zeus Berger doesn’t walk away from anything.

Especially when she's the only woman in the world who might be able to handle me.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up is the first in the Thrusters Series by Pippa Grant. It follows members of the Thrusters professional hockey team out of Copper Valley (fictional town in VA). There is also a series about the baseball team (Fireballs) which is excellent as well (I recently reviewed The Grumpy Player Next Door). It is part of a series but they are standalone books, which I appreciate.

Here is why I love this book so much (and all of the Thrusters books, really): humor, romance, sports stuff, feels, and pranks. Zeus is a big dude with a big personality. The first time you see him he's fitting himself into a tight dress as part of a bet. It's like he HAS to do something if somebody challenges him to.

Joey is a badass. There is no other way to describe her. She's also just so cool that you can't help but love her. And it is that attitude and ability to beat Zeus in everything that gets his attention. He likes the challenge and how tough she is.

Zeus has an.. issue in his pants the night they meet and after that things continue to go wrong for the poor guy. But luckily for him Joey likes that he keeps trying. She wants him to win her over because she wants to know that he's worthy of her time. I can appreciate that, especially since Joey has walls up since her mom ran out on their family when she was a kid.

Not to mention the audio book is great. Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke do a great job, and I love that Erin reads the female voices and Jason reads the male. The back and forth with the 2 voices makes it that much better.

This book is free to read on KU.

Love Not at First Sight by Sarah Ready

When your soul mate is the man you loathed at first sight…Book Two in Sarah Ready’s Soul Mates in Romeo series sparkles with tension and a delicious helping of swoon-worthy romance.

Veronica Diaz loves her career, her friends and the great outdoors – she has no room in her life for men. In fact, she knows there are only two types of men in the world: players and wanna-be players and she wants nothing to do with any of them.

So when a psychic informs Veronica that her fated soul mate is Frederick Knight “The King of Players,” Veronica does what any sensible woman would do – she runs.

A twist of fate lands Veronica in the depths of a pitch-black cave system with a man she’s never met and can’t see. As Veronica and Sam struggle to survive they open up, share their secrets, and risk their lives for each other. Soon Veronica starts to wonder if maybe not all men are players, and maybe she can trust Sam enough to fall in love.

The only problem: Sam is actually Frederick Knight. The man Veronica swore she’d never, ever, ever love.

In fact, she loathed him at first sight.

And if they make it out of the cave alive, and Veronica sees him for the first time, she’ll loathe him again. Won’t she?

But maybe, sometimes you can only see who someone really is when you can’t see them at all? And maybe you can only fall in love when it’s not at first sight?

“This will easily and unequivocally be one of your top reads this year.” By Bookaddict (Chasing Romeo, Book 1 in the Soul Mates in Romeo Series)

Review

I really enjoyed reading this book. Veronica's urge to run is understandable. Her father was a womanizer and dragged her along to snag women, even though he was married. So when she is told (despite her not wanting to know) that Frederick Knight, the well-known playboy, was her soul mate... it seems fair to me that she would take off.

Their time in the cave together was such an important time for both of them. It takes blind dating to a whole other level. They can't see each other because they're stuck in the dark, and instead have to rely on their other senses to get them out.

I fell in love with both of them during their time in the cave system. Frederick (Sam) wanted to be there to support Veronica and her strength and abilities was outstanding. Also, I appreciated the bits of humor. They were in a tough situation but their personalities are what got them through. Also, I never thought cave sex would be a thing but... whew! I don't know how they had the energy for that but... *shrugs hey, it's a romance novel!

A fun read and we get to see characters from the first book in the Soulmates in Romeo series (yay Chloe and Nick... and a baby?!)!

The Grumpy Player Next Door by Pippa Grant

BLURB

An enemies-to-lovers / sports / grumpy-sunshine / neighbor romance

I, Tillie Jean Rock, am not in love with my brother’s teammate. Sure, he might have those biceps and that “I am the grouchiest of grouchy bears” smolder, and he might shovel snow off his driveway next door wearing nothing but boxer shorts and rubber boots, and he might be running a side business feeding all the stray goats in town, but studliness is only skin-deep.

And I might flirt with him every chance I get, but I swear it’s only to annoy my brother.

And him.

Because Max Cole?

Under all of those glorious muscles and chiseled cheekbones and searing glares beats the heart of a heartless devil.

I could no sooner fall in love with a guy who treats me like a kid, and judges me at every opportunity, and sets an army of garden gnomes loose on my yard, than I could fall in love with my grandfather’s pet parrot.

But I can definitely annoy him. I can one hundred percent get on board with annoying him.

That’s what you do when you don’t like your neighbor, right?

But you know what they say about love and hate…

It’s a very thin line.

Especially when the real reason I’m not in love with Max Cole—that he’s incapable of love—might not be true at all.

The Grumpy Player Next door is a fun-filled enemies-to-lovers romcom featuring a ray of sunshine on a mission, an athlete who’s only grouchy around her, and an epic prank gone wrong. It stands alone and comes complete with small-town shenanigans, a goat who’s not nearly as wise as his name suggests, and proof that sometimes, love is the best kind of vengeance.

Review

The book begins with a prank, which I love because the first glimpse of these two characters together causes tension. And THE PRANKS in this book! So many great ones and I would love to see them compare notes with the Bergers and Nick Murphy in the Thrusters books.

In previous Copper Valley Fireballs books you catch bits of Tillie Jean flirting with Max and Cooper getting annoyed by it. There is so much fun and humor in this book, but also bits of insecurity and how Max is dealing with issues like anxiety as well as Tillie Jean's expectations of herself.

Max and Tillie Jean have wonderful chemistry mixed in with all of the fun of Shipwreck. I honestly thought Long Beak Silver couldn't get any funnier but that bird learned some language that is not appropriate for visiting children to hear.

Another hit by Pippa Grant! Check out the excerpt below and there is a link to a giveaway at the end of the post!

EXCERPT

There’s a fine art to revenge, and today, I am arting the hell out of it. I’m talking cackles of glee, evil cartoon overlord-style, rubbing my hands together while bouncing on my toes. Reminding myself to shut up because my brother will be home from his morning workout any minute now, and I don’t want to tip my hand when he doesn’t know I’m waiting for him here in his house up on the mountainside.
You would think he would’ve learned to engage his security system more often by now.
But he hasn’t, which means I’m here, armed and dangerous and ready, and I’m cackling with glee all over again.
I know, I know. Is this really how you want to pay him back for having a box labeled “dildos” delivered to you at your parents’ house in the midst of all the pre-wedding activities for your other brother last week?
Yes, actually.
Yes, it is.
It’s payback time.
Also?
I have zero doubt Cooper will have mad respect that I’m doing this.
Sort of like while I was pissed when he replaced my coffee beans with roasted goat poop before he left for spring training nine months ago, I very much respected that he pulled it off, even if I wasn’t pleased at having to admit that that was the prank that took him over the top to win in our annual off-season prank war.
But this winter?
This winter, my brother Cooper “Stinky Booty” Rock is going down.
The universe told me so. Why else would it have hand-delivered that video into my social media stream to inspire me right after I finished figuring out where to donate an unopened box of dildos?
I cackle again.
And then I slap my hand over my mouth.
He’s home.
There’s his dark head, bent toward the knob, beyond the tempered glass panel beside his front door. He’s dressed in Fireballs red, which is more orange than it is red, and he’s probably worn out from lifting at the gym.
Yesterday was cardio day.
I know, because he ran past Crusty Nut, our dad’s restaurant where I’m the manager five days a week, at least two dozen times without stopping in once to say hi.
I haven’t seen him since the wedding several days ago, which either means he’s avoiding me and the revenge he knows I owe him, or he has a stick up his butt and has forgotten the little people.
Or, possibly, he’s distracted, in which case, he needs this.
I squat into position at the top of the stairs, as hidden as I can be while still seeing my target, Nerf blaster locked and loaded, waiting while he fumbles with his keys.
For the record?
It’s not easy to hide at the top of a curved staircase. I’m on my belly now, half-angled behind the wall of the hallway to his guest bedrooms, peering between the slats of the banister, hoping all my target practice pays off.
Steady, TJ. This is what you trained for.
The lock clicks.
I flatten myself lower and take aim.
The door swings open.
Dark hair in the foyer. Go go go.
I squeeze the trigger, sending a rapid blast of modified foam darts at the six balloons floating in the space above the door.
The needle sticking out barely an eighth of an inch in the tip of the first dart connects. One helium balloon pops. Then two more, followed by the fourth and fifth. The sixth shifts after getting hit, like it’s a tough guy balloon. It’s the ninja of balloons, and it doesn’t want to participate in my dastardly plans today, but that’s okay. The other balloons are bursting in a sparkly, shiny, beautiful pink glitter spray that’s splattering on the walls, exploding from its nylon shell and raining down like a spring shower, coating the walls, making the air sparkle, and dusting all that dark hair as Cooper’s lifting his head. “What the—”
And in the span of a heartbeat, before he can finish that sentence, I realize my mistake.
My terrible, horrible, very bad miscalculation.
If I were a superhero, I’d be sucking all that glitter into my lungs and redirecting it into my brother’s bedroom, which is likely what I should’ve done in the first place—hindsight, right?—but I didn’t. This was so much more dramatic and didn’t risk me having to find out which local he’s screwing around with in his spare time, as she’d be coated in glitter too after rolling around in his sheets, except my prank has failed.
It has failed spectacularly.
Oh my god,” I gasp.
That’s not Cooper.
That is so not Cooper.

A laugh out loud, soul mate chasing rom-com romp, Sarah Ready’s Chasing Romeo is a perfect feel-good novel about finding love where you least expect it.

But there’s a tiny problem.

Chloe’s soul mate is 1 of 7 men, spread across the U.S. and she has only one week to reach him.

Out of desperation she hires Nick O’Shea, a cynical private investigator who thinks soul mates, love and happily ever afters are a load of crap.

Chloe and Nick have nothing in common. She wants her soul mate. He wants to get paid.

But on their crazy, true love chasing road trip across the U.S. Nick starts to wonder if maybe he was wrong about love, and Chloe starts to wonder if she was wrong about the identity of her Romeo.

Soon, Chloe will have to choose between her soul mate and the man she hired to find him.

Opposites attract in the first book of a heartwarming new series by romance author Sarah Ready.

Review

Chloe really wants to find her soul mate. Enough that she'll travel across the country with her enemy and high school ex-boyfriend. Their relationship is pretty adorable and some hilarious things happen as they try to find the RIGHT Matt Smith. The trip is pretty chaotic and crazy, but the people they meet along the way also teach them about themselves. An excellent read for a beach day or just hanging out at home!

Excerpt

“I’m just asking,” I say, “are you sure you want to bet your future on a myth?” Because, to be honest, something inside me wishes she’d get up and say, screw you, fate, I’m taking my future in my own hands.
“Would I bet my future?” she asks.
I nod and lean forward to hear her answer.
Slowly, she says, “I’d bet everything.”
Her words ring in my ears. She’s serious. She’ll do anything to get with this random guy she hasn’t seen in nearly twenty years. It’s like a cosmic joke, except I’m not laughing. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less.
“It’s a myth,” I say. “It’s not real.”
“It is,” she says. She points her finger at me and jabs me in the chest. “And I’m going to prove it to you.” Her hand rests over my heart. We both look down at her touching me. She yanks it back and wipes her hand on her napkin.
No man likes to see a woman wipe herself off after touching him. I scowl and then take her unspoken challenge. “More likely, by the end of this week, I’ll prove that soul mates don’t exist.”
“Good luck, you have hundreds of Aunt Erma’s successes against you.”
No worries, I stand by my belief that the whole town of Romeo is suffering from romantic delusions. Hey, the tourism dollars depend on it.
Also, I’d like to push a little bit of reality into this situation and throw out the idea that this guy might not be decent.
“He could be a rapist,” I say. That gets her attention. Her head snaps up and she glares at me.
“Or a Lothario,” she says. Take that, her eyes say. She bares her teeth at me in a semblance of a grin and I smile back. Game on.
The minstrel who had wandered close again hightails it to the other side of the restaurant.
“He could be a drug dealer,” I say.
“Or a pharmacist,” she says.
“He could be an alcoholic.”
“A vintner.”
“He’s unemployed,” I say.
“Independently wealthy.”
“He looks like a frog.”
“He’s a prince,” she says.
“He’s boring.”
“Strong and silent.”
I glare at her and she glares back, a smile curving on her lips.
“Bad in bed,” I say.
“A sex god.” She bites at her lower lip and I have the urge to take it in my mouth and show her a decade of pent-up wanting. I yank my thoughts from her lips and drop my ace in the hole.
“He could be an ax murderer,” I say. Take that and chew on it.
She laughs, throaty and low, and her eyes light up. The candlelight sparks off her glowing skin.
“Or,” she says, “he’s a lumberjack. Mmmm. Sexy ax. I’ll hold the handle. Rawr.” She claws her hand and scratches at the air.
I shake my head. “You got it.” I hold up my goblet of mead for a toast. “To Matt Smith. Chloe’s lumberjack soul mate.”

Tie Me Down by Melanie Harlow

Like any cowboy, he’s good with a rope and knows exactly how to tie me up.
But what if I want him to tie me down?

Tie Me Down, an all new smoldering second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is now live!

Just friends.
That’s all Beckett Weaver and I have ever been.
Sure, he’s a hot cowboy who left Wall Street behind to take over his family’s ranch. Yes, I’ve had a secret crush on him since we were seventeen. And who wouldn’t appreciate those strong hands, that massive chest, and the way he fills out a pair of Levis?
He makes a girl sweat just looking at him . . . and I look. A lot.
But I’m a single mom trying to move on with my life, and he’s running that ranch single-handedly while taking care of his elderly father. We don’t even live in the same state. I only returned to my hometown of Bellamy Creek to sell my late mother’s house, and he just invited me and my son to stay with him because he’s got a big heart.
That’s not the only big thing he’s got--which I discover the night I finally sneak across the hall to his bedroom and shed my inhibitions right alongside my pajamas. And once we give into each other, we can’t stop.
The hayloft. The bed of his truck. The dock by the pond.
Nothing has ever felt so right, but his past has taught him not to believe in happily ever after, and every perfect night I spend in his arms brings us closer to goodbye.
Like any cowboy, he’s good with a rope and knows exactly how to tie me up.
But what if I want him to tie me down?

Review

Recently I showed the cover for this book, now let's talk about how it was. It. Was. Wonderful. Beautiful. Heartfelt. At times, painful (for the right reasons). Can I just say how much I loved Beckett? Despite his taking care of his father, he allows his childhood neighbor Maddie (who he crushed on for years) to stay at his house for a short time with her son while she fixes her mom's house to sell. We all know how this goes. Sparks fly despite the fact that she is supposed to go home.

Beckett does the thing where he tries to separate himself from his feelings, but he wants her so much. And the feels, guys! The feels! The relationship with Maddie's son is also cute. Elliott is a special addition to the story and reading about their relationships was touching. Elliott likes things like unicorns and the color pink. I appreciated that Maddie let him express himself despite her ex's disapproval. Also the element of friendship between the guys shows that just because some people choose to leave, it doesn't mean that you can't still love and appreciate those around you. It was a truly beautiful reminder.

Grumpy Cowboy by Max Monroe

He’s a real-life, blue-eyed, tough-as-nails, thirtysomething cowboy who is so darn strong he looks like he could lift a car just for the heck of it.
He’s also stubborn, rude, and we don’t get along…at all.

Grumpy Cowboy, an all new laugh out loud rom com from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is available now!

ATTENTION: If you have been a victim of false advertising, you may be entitled to compensation. If you were ever hired to take care of a fourteen-year-old boy’s knee injury on a luxury ranch in the Middle of Nowhere, Utah, but that fourteen-year-old boy ended up being a tall, rough-and-tumble, muscular, one-hundred-percent all-man cowboy by the name of Rhett Jameson, you may have been put at risk for falling in love. Please seek counsel immediately.

Dear Counselor,

It was supposed to be simple favor for my very important boss, Frank Kaminsky of the Salt Lake Slammers professional basketball team—go to his good friend Tex Jameson’s luxury ranch and provide personal medical care for his recently injured teenage son.

I thought it’d be a working vacation of sorts—a chance for my city-girl self to experience something I would never otherwise do—but everything is upside down, and absolutely nothing is as I thought it would be.

For one, this patient is not a teenage boy.
He’s a real-life, blue-eyed, tough-as-nails, thirtysomething cowboy who is so darn strong he looks like he could lift a car just for the heck of it.

He’s also stubborn, rude, and we don’t get along…at all.

Add in the heart-melting vision of him as a single father to the cutest little girl on the planet, and I’ve found myself in a whole different dimension of trouble.

Lust. Feelings. A whole lot of enemies-to-lovers-style complication.

Please help me. My name is Dr. Leah Levee, I am a victim of false advertising, and if I’m not careful, this Grumpy Cowboy might just be the death of me.

My Review

I can't help myself with how much I loved this book. It has two of my favorite romance novel tropes, a grumpy hero and single dad. I can't help it and I don't know why I find them so hot! I'll be honest and say that I didn't like Leah at the start because I saw her love of high heel shoes and fancy dresses and rolled my eyes. But the woman has grit and determination, more than enough to make sure Rhett does what he needs to heal his leg. Rhett says she can treat his leg if she can find him, and I appreciated that she was willing to do what needed to be done, and she doesn't look down on hard work. I mean, she's a doctor! Also, Rhett's daughter Joey is adorable and I understand the obsession with Target that Leah and Joey have. I feel you, ladies!

Beyond the grumpy hero and other cuteness, there is A LOT of humor here. The part with the bull and the... collection... had me rolling. Definitely worth the read. 5 stars! Also, it is on KU so that is always a plus!

Call Me Crazy by Melanie Harlow

It was the perfect plan. I needed a wife--temporarily--in order to inherit the family business. And she needed a favor--the kind that takes nine months to deliver.

Call Me Crazy, an all-new steamy and heartfelt small-town romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

Blurb

We had it all worked out, from the no-touching policy on our wedding night (her rule) to the no-falling-in-love decree (mine). She’d marry me, I’d give her the means to have the baby she’d always wanted, and one year later we’d amicably part ways with no hassle, no demands, and certainly no regrets.

After all, Bianca DeRossi and I are experts at infuriating one another--we’ve been doing it since we were kids. Trouble is, she grew up gorgeous and feisty, and she still knows exactly how to get under my skin.

And that wedding night? Well, it doesn’t exactly go down hands-free.

Then she moves in with me, and I really start to lose my mind. From her sexy little pout to her wicked sense of humor to those meatball sandwiches she makes just because she knows they’re my favorite... I find myself wanting to break every rule we put in place.

Our story was never supposed to end with happily ever after.
But call me crazy, I just might be in love with my wife.

My review

These are two stubborn people. Now don't get me wrong, I love an enemies to lovers trope, but the fake marriage one not so much. I've been interested in Enzo and Bianca's relationship since we see them argue in the 2nd Bellamy Creek book, Make Me Yours. Enzo wants a wife so he can take over the family business and he's getting pressure to settle down. Bianca really wants a baby but has fertility issues and no current boyfriend. Their solution? Get married!

I don't want to get spoilery here, but things don't go as planned, they have trouble sharing, and they have to figure out how to be together. These people needed to learn how to maneuver a relationship and found the past they had was built on misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It was nice to see them grow and realize they actually liked and cared for each other. Cute ending and I can't wait for the next book in the series! While reading it you get an idea of who the next couple will be.

*Possible trigger warning* Bianca's being emotionally distraught after not getting pregnant right away. Fertility issues are involved in the book.

Like You Love Me by Adriana Locke

Like You Love Me, an all-new marriage of convenience standalone romance and first book in the Honey Creek series from USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke is available now!

Two childhood friends are playing house—and maybe playing for keeps—in USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke’s

funny, sexy, and unpredictable marriage-of-convenience romance.

To save her Tennessee bed-and-breakfast, Sophie Bates needs a fast-cash miracle. Holden McKenzie, her childhood best

friend, needs to prove to a prospective employer that he’s a committed man. Their fortunes on the line,

Holden proposes…a solution.

He’ll take care of Sophie’s bills if she agrees to a temporary marriage of convenience. And why not? They’re comfortable

together, they have fun, and they trust each other. It’s as simple as saying “I do.” But the off-the-cuff wedding has all of

Honey Creek talking—and Sophie and Holden realizing that their perfect arrangement is working too well. If they’re not

careful, this marriage could turn into a love story.

My review:

I got an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. I wasn't sure what to expect because I'd never read anything by her before and I'm not really a fan of the friends-to-lovers OR fake marriage tropes and this had both. Also, I tend to get frustrated by characters that have walls up, and BOY DOES SHE. I get that Sophie has been hurt before and wants to protect herself, so watching her keep those walls up around Holden was rough for me. She also knows that he isn't planning on staying so it is justified.

That said, this story was cute! Sophie and Holden have a good relationship and the choices they make aren't selfish. Nobody is out to purposefully hurt the other person to create distance (I hate when that happens), which makes the HEA more believable. Worth the read!
