The Secret by Max Monroe

Mr. Hot Professor, the man I’m determined to resist, is challenging me to a competition—a playful, secret game, so to speak—where the winner takes all.

The Secret, an all-new hot as sin romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

Dear Fellow Bookworms,

I need your help.

I, Rachel Rose, am in quite the pickle with a hot-as-sin English Lit professor by the name of Ty Winslow, and I don’t know how to get out of it.

Let me break it down for you:

Girl meets Guy.

Girl gives Guy her underwear on a dare but nothing else identifying (like her name or number) because she plans to never see Guy again.

But Girl does see Guy again, in a very professional setting, where she is to be the Teaching Assistant to his Professor for an entire semester.

Girl would like to ignore all events of the past, but Guy is a whole list of tempting things that are hard to resist. (See below:)

#1: Insanely attractive.
#2: The most fun a girl could ever have.
#3: Successful and intelligent.
#4: He can quote Walt Whitman at the drop of a hat—which I’m sure you know is a dangerous thing for a literature-lover.
#5: Smooth with a capital S. He could charm the panties off a woman WITHOUT the help of a dare.

And now, Mr. Hot Professor, the man I’m determined to resist, is challenging me to a competition—a playful, secret game, so to speak—where the winner takes all.

My plan? Play the game long enough to win—long enough to walk away with the upper hand—without doing something stupid like falling in love.

It’s possible . . . right?

If you have any advice, please reach out to me soon—before it’s too late.

XOXO,
Rachel

I loved this book. I need you to know that first and that I'm not just saying that because I got an advance copy. I have also loved the other books in this series, The Bet and The Pact. Those Winslow brothers are just... wonderful. This book was fun and despite the fact that I do not like forbidden type romance books, this didn't feel forbidden. It helped that Rachel wasn't his student so there wasn't a weird age gap. Ty was super loveable and I was rooting for things to work out (as all good romance novels do). The humor in this one made it even better. I can't wait for Remy's book, The Redo to come out in July! I've been waiting to read more about him since Winnie Winslow & Wes's book (Scoring the Billionaire) and Charlotte & Nick's (Dr. NEURO). They're not required to read but give a little more insight into the Winslow family.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up by Pippa Grant

We need to talk about this book. Mostly because it is part of the BBA Book Club this month, but also because I'm co-hosting the discussion about it.

Join us at 8pm EST on August 1st for

Description
He’s the biggest, baddest, most spider-fearing motherpucker on the ice…

When you’re named after the king of the gods, the world expects certain things of you.

Tough? Damn right.

Smart? Don’t let the hockey uniform fool you.

Large and in charge? Honey, I’m the biggest, baddest, mother pucking-est machine to ever own the ice. I shoot. I score. In and out of the rink. I don’t come early, but I come often, if you know what I mean. And I always leave the ladies wanting more.

Until that chick last night.

I’m no one-thrust wonder, and you’re damn right I’m going to prove to her I can do better. But every time I think I’m finally on my way back into her pants, she one-ups and out-balls me.

I should cut my losses, lick my wounds, and walk away.

But Zeus Berger doesn’t walk away from anything.

Especially when she's the only woman in the world who might be able to handle me.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up is the first in the Thrusters Series by Pippa Grant. It follows members of the Thrusters professional hockey team out of Copper Valley (fictional town in VA). There is also a series about the baseball team (Fireballs) which is excellent as well (I recently reviewed The Grumpy Player Next Door). It is part of a series but they are standalone books, which I appreciate.

Here is why I love this book so much (and all of the Thrusters books, really): humor, romance, sports stuff, feels, and pranks. Zeus is a big dude with a big personality. The first time you see him he's fitting himself into a tight dress as part of a bet. It's like he HAS to do something if somebody challenges him to.

Joey is a badass. There is no other way to describe her. She's also just so cool that you can't help but love her. And it is that attitude and ability to beat Zeus in everything that gets his attention. He likes the challenge and how tough she is.

Zeus has an.. issue in his pants the night they meet and after that things continue to go wrong for the poor guy. But luckily for him Joey likes that he keeps trying. She wants him to win her over because she wants to know that he's worthy of her time. I can appreciate that, especially since Joey has walls up since her mom ran out on their family when she was a kid.

Not to mention the audio book is great. Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke do a great job, and I love that Erin reads the female voices and Jason reads the male. The back and forth with the 2 voices makes it that much better.

This book is free to read on KU.

Tie Me Down by Melanie Harlow

Like any cowboy, he’s good with a rope and knows exactly how to tie me up.
But what if I want him to tie me down?

Tie Me Down, an all new smoldering second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is now live!

Just friends.
That’s all Beckett Weaver and I have ever been.
Sure, he’s a hot cowboy who left Wall Street behind to take over his family’s ranch. Yes, I’ve had a secret crush on him since we were seventeen. And who wouldn’t appreciate those strong hands, that massive chest, and the way he fills out a pair of Levis?
He makes a girl sweat just looking at him . . . and I look. A lot.
But I’m a single mom trying to move on with my life, and he’s running that ranch single-handedly while taking care of his elderly father. We don’t even live in the same state. I only returned to my hometown of Bellamy Creek to sell my late mother’s house, and he just invited me and my son to stay with him because he’s got a big heart.
That’s not the only big thing he’s got--which I discover the night I finally sneak across the hall to his bedroom and shed my inhibitions right alongside my pajamas. And once we give into each other, we can’t stop.
The hayloft. The bed of his truck. The dock by the pond.
Nothing has ever felt so right, but his past has taught him not to believe in happily ever after, and every perfect night I spend in his arms brings us closer to goodbye.
Like any cowboy, he’s good with a rope and knows exactly how to tie me up.
But what if I want him to tie me down?

Review

Recently I showed the cover for this book, now let's talk about how it was. It. Was. Wonderful. Beautiful. Heartfelt. At times, painful (for the right reasons). Can I just say how much I loved Beckett? Despite his taking care of his father, he allows his childhood neighbor Maddie (who he crushed on for years) to stay at his house for a short time with her son while she fixes her mom's house to sell. We all know how this goes. Sparks fly despite the fact that she is supposed to go home.

Beckett does the thing where he tries to separate himself from his feelings, but he wants her so much. And the feels, guys! The feels! The relationship with Maddie's son is also cute. Elliott is a special addition to the story and reading about their relationships was touching. Elliott likes things like unicorns and the color pink. I appreciated that Maddie let him express himself despite her ex's disapproval. Also the element of friendship between the guys shows that just because some people choose to leave, it doesn't mean that you can't still love and appreciate those around you. It was a truly beautiful reminder.

Tie Me Down is the fourth (and final) book in the Bellamy Creek Series. They are all stand-alone books, but you get so much more by reading everyone's story!

Grumpy Cowboy by Max Monroe

He’s a real-life, blue-eyed, tough-as-nails, thirtysomething cowboy who is so darn strong he looks like he could lift a car just for the heck of it.
He’s also stubborn, rude, and we don’t get along…at all.

Grumpy Cowboy, an all new laugh out loud rom com from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is available now!

ATTENTION: If you have been a victim of false advertising, you may be entitled to compensation. If you were ever hired to take care of a fourteen-year-old boy’s knee injury on a luxury ranch in the Middle of Nowhere, Utah, but that fourteen-year-old boy ended up being a tall, rough-and-tumble, muscular, one-hundred-percent all-man cowboy by the name of Rhett Jameson, you may have been put at risk for falling in love. Please seek counsel immediately.

Dear Counselor,

It was supposed to be simple favor for my very important boss, Frank Kaminsky of the Salt Lake Slammers professional basketball team—go to his good friend Tex Jameson’s luxury ranch and provide personal medical care for his recently injured teenage son.

I thought it’d be a working vacation of sorts—a chance for my city-girl self to experience something I would never otherwise do—but everything is upside down, and absolutely nothing is as I thought it would be.

For one, this patient is not a teenage boy.
He’s a real-life, blue-eyed, tough-as-nails, thirtysomething cowboy who is so darn strong he looks like he could lift a car just for the heck of it.

He’s also stubborn, rude, and we don’t get along…at all.

Add in the heart-melting vision of him as a single father to the cutest little girl on the planet, and I’ve found myself in a whole different dimension of trouble.

Lust. Feelings. A whole lot of enemies-to-lovers-style complication.

Please help me. My name is Dr. Leah Levee, I am a victim of false advertising, and if I’m not careful, this Grumpy Cowboy might just be the death of me.

My Review

I can't help myself with how much I loved this book. It has two of my favorite romance novel tropes, a grumpy hero and single dad. I can't help it and I don't know why I find them so hot! I'll be honest and say that I didn't like Leah at the start because I saw her love of high heel shoes and fancy dresses and rolled my eyes. But the woman has grit and determination, more than enough to make sure Rhett does what he needs to heal his leg. Rhett says she can treat his leg if she can find him, and I appreciated that she was willing to do what needed to be done, and she doesn't look down on hard work. I mean, she's a doctor! Also, Rhett's daughter Joey is adorable and I understand the obsession with Target that Leah and Joey have. I feel you, ladies!

Beyond the grumpy hero and other cuteness, there is A LOT of humor here. The part with the bull and the... collection... had me rolling. Definitely worth the read. 5 stars! Also, it is on KU so that is always a plus!

I Pucking Love You by Pippa Grant

Title: I Pucking Love You
Series: Copper Valley Thrusters #5
Author: Pippa Grant
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 8, 2021

BLURB

You know those stories where an adorably misunderstood clumsy girl needs a fake date to a wedding so she asks her brother’s best friend and they accidentally fall in love?

I wish that was the kind of life I lead, but it’s not.

I don’t need a date to a wedding. I need a date to a funeral.
Clumsy sometimes fits, but then, that’s true for all of us, right? But adorable? No. Misunderstood? Nope again. I’m just your average girl, standing in front of a funeral invitation, asking it to be a winning lottery ticket instead.

And I don’t have a brother, or a best friend with a brother available, which means I’m stuck with Tyler Jaeger.

Sure, he’s a professional hockey player who also knows advanced calculus, but let’s say we’re not compatible and leave it at that. I should know. I am a matchmaker.

Not a very good one, but that’s beside the point.

I know a mismatch when I see one.

Still, Tyler’s what I’ve got, and I am not going to this funeral solo, so he’s what I’ll take.

After all—what could go wrong at a funeral?

I Pucking Love You is a hilariously wrong romantic comedy about the world’s worst matchmaker, a hockey player with a problem he doesn’t want to talk about, and an awkward date-of-convenience that everyone would prefer to forget. It comes complete with a cat working his way through his nine lives, all the sexy times, fish and chips, and a swoony happily-ever-after.

My Review

I LOVED this book so much. Ones reason is because I have been shipping Muffy and Tyler since Charming as Puck when Tyler was impressed Muffy called Nick a Neanderthal in nerd. Also, we get to find out what happened to make her leave medical school.

This book was fun and funny. I laughed out loud multiple times and caught myself smiling like an idiot as I read it. That's how you know it is good. I also got excited to see the old favorites again (Ares!).

Another aspect I wasn't expecting was to see how Muffy's relationships with her family effected her and how she saw herself. It gave Tyler the opportunity to she her her own worth and to be able to stand up for herself once she could see that she was valued. The brief period as an English Major also made me analyze the book and relationships in it, though so don't mind me.

I got an ARC copy but I'll still be buying my own final copy because I loved it so much. However, I will keep standing on my soap box and demanding Team Captain Duncan Lavoie gets a book. I NEED IT! Keep reading below for an excerpt from the book and a chance to win a book box!

EXCERPT

Tyler

We all have to be at practice tomorrow morning—check that, this morning, as it’s shortly after midnight—but I don’t want to go home.

I don’t want to drink. I don’t want to talk. I don’t want to screw.

I want—

Dammit.

I want a bucket of greasy fried fish and chips, because it’s what my big brother used to take me to get every time he came home on leave from the Marines and got annoyed at being hen-pecked by the four sisters between us.

My car’s cold, thanks to the early November weather, and no, I’m not telling you what kind of car I drive, because yes, it very much feels like compensation tonight.

It gets me where I want to go.

That’s all that matters.

That, and getting my ass to Cod Pieces before they close for the night.

Could I stay at the bunny bar and get fried fish and chips?

Yes.

Will I?

No fucking way.

I’m still stewing in my own misery when the bright neon sign with the armored cod and the storefront that looks like a medieval castle comes into view at the edge of a strip mall four miles the wrong direction from my downtown condo. I roll the window down, letting in a blast of chilly air and the scent of fries.

Just in time.

I holler my order over the sound of my engine, then pull around to the window to get my fish.

Debate calling my brother in Miami.

It’s one AM. He and his wife recently celebrated their kid’s first birthday, and I think they’re working on baby number two.

If I call him in the middle of the night to bitch about how I can’t get it up, he’ll probably hang up on me, then tell our sisters.

And Mom.

She’s a professional comedienne with her own popular Netflix special. There’s no damn way I’m bothering West in the middle of the night for this.

I’ll talk to the fried fish and call it even.

Has as much personality as West had before he married Daisy.

The window swings open. “That’ll be fourteen seventy-three, please.”

My car lurches forward before I remember to put it in park, and I gape up at the woman staring down at me. “Muffy?”

My brain is playing tricks on me.

It has to be.

Because there’s no way the curvy, clumsy, smart-mouthed goddess who’s haunting my dick is standing there wearing a Cod Pieces polo and hat.

But she is.

And I swear to god, her long brown braids are recoiling in horror as her whole face twists, her lip curling, her left eye squeezing shut, before she snaps herself together. “For the hundredth time today, I have no idea who this Muffy person is. My name is Octavia Louisa Beaverhousen.”

Fuck me.

There are two of them? She looks exactly like Muffy. I’m not seeing things, and I’m not projecting just because I want my dick to work again and the bunnies made me think about screwing Muffy in the walk-in fridge at the bunny bar.

“Fourteen seventy-three, please.” She turns away as she holds out a hand, twitching her fingers like she’s waiting for cash or a card.

And that’s when I see the tattoo.

Rufus.
Her cat’s name. It’s on her wrist.

Octavia Louisa Beaverhousen, my ass. This is Muffy.

Call Me Crazy by Melanie Harlow

It was the perfect plan. I needed a wife--temporarily--in order to inherit the family business. And she needed a favor--the kind that takes nine months to deliver.

Call Me Crazy, an all-new steamy and heartfelt small-town romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

Blurb

We had it all worked out, from the no-touching policy on our wedding night (her rule) to the no-falling-in-love decree (mine). She’d marry me, I’d give her the means to have the baby she’d always wanted, and one year later we’d amicably part ways with no hassle, no demands, and certainly no regrets.

After all, Bianca DeRossi and I are experts at infuriating one another--we’ve been doing it since we were kids. Trouble is, she grew up gorgeous and feisty, and she still knows exactly how to get under my skin.

And that wedding night? Well, it doesn’t exactly go down hands-free.

Then she moves in with me, and I really start to lose my mind. From her sexy little pout to her wicked sense of humor to those meatball sandwiches she makes just because she knows they’re my favorite... I find myself wanting to break every rule we put in place.

Our story was never supposed to end with happily ever after.
But call me crazy, I just might be in love with my wife.

My review

These are two stubborn people. Now don't get me wrong, I love an enemies to lovers trope, but the fake marriage one not so much. I've been interested in Enzo and Bianca's relationship since we see them argue in the 2nd Bellamy Creek book, Make Me Yours. Enzo wants a wife so he can take over the family business and he's getting pressure to settle down. Bianca really wants a baby but has fertility issues and no current boyfriend. Their solution? Get married!

I don't want to get spoilery here, but things don't go as planned, they have trouble sharing, and they have to figure out how to be together. These people needed to learn how to maneuver a relationship and found the past they had was built on misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It was nice to see them grow and realize they actually liked and cared for each other. Cute ending and I can't wait for the next book in the series! While reading it you get an idea of who the next couple will be.

*Possible trigger warning* Bianca's being emotionally distraught after not getting pregnant right away. Fertility issues are involved in the book.

Like You Love Me by Adriana Locke

Like You Love Me, an all-new marriage of convenience standalone romance and first book in the Honey Creek series from USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke is available now!

Two childhood friends are playing house—and maybe playing for keeps—in USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke’s

funny, sexy, and unpredictable marriage-of-convenience romance.

To save her Tennessee bed-and-breakfast, Sophie Bates needs a fast-cash miracle. Holden McKenzie, her childhood best

friend, needs to prove to a prospective employer that he’s a committed man. Their fortunes on the line,

Holden proposes…a solution.

He’ll take care of Sophie’s bills if she agrees to a temporary marriage of convenience. And why not? They’re comfortable

together, they have fun, and they trust each other. It’s as simple as saying “I do.” But the off-the-cuff wedding has all of

Honey Creek talking—and Sophie and Holden realizing that their perfect arrangement is working too well. If they’re not

careful, this marriage could turn into a love story.

My review:

I got an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. I wasn't sure what to expect because I'd never read anything by her before and I'm not really a fan of the friends-to-lovers OR fake marriage tropes and this had both. Also, I tend to get frustrated by characters that have walls up, and BOY DOES SHE. I get that Sophie has been hurt before and wants to protect herself, so watching her keep those walls up around Holden was rough for me. She also knows that he isn't planning on staying so it is justified.

That said, this story was cute! Sophie and Holden have a good relationship and the choices they make aren't selfish. Nobody is out to purposefully hurt the other person to create distance (I hate when that happens), which makes the HEA more believable. Worth the read!

Make Me Yours by Melanie Harlow

He’s my brother’s best friend.

The hot single dad next door.

And one accidental sext later, my massive crush on him is no longer a secret.

Make Me Yours, an all-new rom com that is all too sexy from USA Today

bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

It’s my own damn fault. I’m thirty years old, for heaven’s sake. I’m a kindergarten teacher and a (reasonably) responsible

adult. I should know better than to get tipsy and draft a fake text listing all the dirty things I wish Officer Cole Mitchell would

do to me.

I wasn’t supposed to hit send.

He wasn’t supposed to see it.

And he definitely wasn’t supposed to text back telling me to go on . . .

Because after that, things escalate quickly.

Cole is everything I’ve ever wanted. He’s sexy and protective. A devoted father to his little girl. A dedicated cop the whole town adores. The kind of guy you can trust to keep his hands to himself, even when you’re desperately hoping he won’t.

I’m not the girl he thought he’d end up with, but after all this time, I might finally get the chance to say the words I’ve always dreamed of . . . make me yours.

This is one of those books you continue to think about for days after you read it. What hit me most is how our fears can sometimes keep us from the things we want and the things that are good for us. That is what both characters struggle with. Cheyenne has been in love with Cole, her brother's best friend, for years. She spends time with his daughter regularly. But Cole has kept his guard up, mostly to protect himself. When he finally decides what he wants, though... wow. Definite sparks. Both of them have struggles but what I love most about these kinds of books is that despite that, they come together for a HEA and I love how they get there. Cole's daughter is adorable and smart and I love how much she and Cheyenne care for each other. I also appreciated the underlying lesson that it is not only OK, but it is good to talk to someone about how you are doing so you can get help, and that love can make you stronger. I will be reading this book again. Note: I received an ARC in exchange for a review.

Excerpt

Darlene spoke up. “My mother passed them down to me, and I want to make sure they’re

in good condition so I can leave them to Cheyenne when she gets married.” Then she crossed herself

and closed her eyes, her lips moving in a quick, silent prayer. Cheyenne ignored her mother and

addressed Mariah again. “My brother and I always had to wash and dry the wedding china on holidays

before we went to bed. It took forever.”

“I’d stay and help you, sis, but I have to get Blair home. Sorry.” Griffin gave her a grin that said he wasn’t

the least bit sorry, and Cheyenne stuck her tongue out at him.

“Cole, why don’t you stay and give Cheyenne a hand?” My mother suggested, wrapping her scarf around her

neck.

“That’s a great idea,” Darlene said brightly. Then she sort of bent over and rubbed one hip, her expression

agonized. “I’d help her myself but I’ve been on my feet a lot today and the doctor said that isn’t good for my joints.”

“You should just get to bed, Darlene,”my mother said, shepherding Mariah toward the front door. “Cole will be

more than happy to stay and help Cheyenne.”

“Oh, that’s okay.” Cheyenne smiled at me and shook her head. “I can handle them.”

But Darlene beamed at me, reaching over and snatching my coat out of my hands. “That’s so nice of you, Cole.

I’ll just hang this in the front closet.” Before she left the room, she and my mother exchanged a look that had me

wondering if the whole helping-with-the-dishes thing had been a set-up.

Either way, ten minutes later Cheyenne and I were pushing up our sleeves in the kitchen, the house dark and silent

except for the running faucet and the hum of the dishwasher.

“I’ll wash, you dry?” she asked, adding dish soap to the side of the sink she’d plugged and lined with a towel.

“Sure.”

She took a plate from the stack to her left and placed it in the warm soapy water. “Oh! I almost forgot.” Slipping her rings

and bracelets off, she set them on the windowsill above the sink. “So I don’t scratch anything,” she explained.

“Oh.” I glanced down at my wedding ring. “It’s okay,” she said quickly. “You don’t have to take it off.”

“It’s fine,” I said, working it off my finger and placing it on the sill next to her jewelry. For some reason, I felt compelled to

explain why I still wore it all the time. “Mariah once told me she likes when I wear it, so  .  .  .”

“I think it’s nice, ”she said. “I like a guy who wears his ring. It says something about him, you know?”

I nodded, my attraction to her growing even stronger. “Still, we’d better be careful with these dishes.”

“Damn right, we’d better,” she deadpanned. “This is my fucking wedding china, Cole. If we even look at it wrong, I might

end up a spinster.” She laughed as she gently scrubbed the plate with a cloth. “My God. Is she not totally ridiculous?”

“She’s pretty bad,” I agreed, taking the plate from her and carefully drying it with the soft clean towel she’d given me.

“But mine wasn’t much better tonight. Did you have the feeling something was up between them as we were saying goodnight?”

“Yes,” she said. “And it’s probably my fault because I made the mistake of telling my mom you bought me dinner last night. In

her mind, I believe we are now betrothed.”

I laughed. “That’s all it takes, huh?”

“Apparently. Tomorrow I’ll be pregnant because we washed dishes together after dark.”

“Wow. Guess I should have worn the rubber gloves.”
